How to Measure Your Ring Size at Home

Finding a ring you love is the easy part. Knowing your size? That's where most people get stuck. Whether you're treating yourself, buying a gift, or dropping a not so subtle hint to someone special, getting the right ring size makes all the difference.

The good news is you don't need to visit a jeweller to figure it out. Here are a few simple methods you can do to measure your ring size at home.

Method 1: The String or Paper Method

This is the most accurate DIY method and all you need is a thin strip of paper or a piece of string, a pen, and a ruler.

1. Wrap the paper or string around the base of the finger you want to measure, this is where the ring will sit.
2. Mark the point where the paper or string overlaps to form a complete circle.
3. Lay it flat and measure the length in millimetres.
4. This measurement is your finger's circumference. Use a ring size chart to find your size.

Top tip: Measure your finger at the end of the day. Fingers naturally swell slightly with warmth, so an evening measurement gives you the most accurate fit.

Method 2: Measure a Ring You Already Own

Already have a ring that fits perfectly on that finger? Even easier.

1. Place the ring flat on a ruler.
2. Measure the inside diameter, that's the distance straight across the inside of the ring, in millimetres.
3. Match that number to a ring size chart.

This method is especially handy when you're buying a gift and want to keep it a surprise, just borrow a ring from their jewellery box that they wear on that finger.

Method 3: Use a Ring Sizer

Many jewellers can provide a ring sizer tool. These are small plastic or metal gauges that slip over your finger so you can find your exact size instantly. You can buy one pretty inexpensively online.

UK & Irish Ring Size Guide

In Ireland and the UK, ring sizes are measured in letters. Here's a quick reference guide:

Most women's rings fall between sizes J and P, and most men's rings between P and T — but everyone is different, so always measure before you buy.

Things to Keep in Mind If You Measure Your Ring Size at Home:

• Temperature matters. Fingers are smaller in the cold and larger in the heat. Try to measure at room temperature for the most reliable result.
• Knuckle vs. base. If your knuckle is noticeably wider than the base of your finger, measure both and go for a size in between.
• Different fingers, different sizes. Your ring finger on your right hand may be a different size to your left, so always measure the specific finger the ring is for.
• Wide bands fit tighter. If you're buying a wide band, like an eternity ring or a chunky statement piece, consider going up a half size as wider bands sit more snugly on the finger.
