Amber Jewellery: What It Is, Why We're Obsessed, and How to Wear It This Autumn

Amber Jewellery

As the leaves turn and everyone starts reaching for warmer tones. One material keeps showing up in our jewellery box on repeat: amber. It's been having a proper moment, and honestly, we get it, that warm honey glow is basically autumn in gemstone form.

If you've ever picked up an amber ring or pendant and wondered what you're actually looking at (or whether it's the real deal), this one's for you.

What is amber, actually?

Amber isn't a stone at all. It's fossilised tree resin, some of it tens of millions of years old. That's why no two pieces look exactly the same. You'll see it in warm honey, deep cognac, and even pale lemon shades, sometimes with tiny natural inclusions that prove it's the real thing rather than moulded resin.

It's been used in jewellery for centuries, especially across the Baltic region, which is still where most of the world's amber comes from. A lot of the vintage pieces we source carry that same old-world charm. You're not just buying a pretty stone, you're buying a small piece of history.

How to tell real amber from fake

Not everything sold as "amber" actually is. A few easy ways to check:

  • The warmth test. Real amber feels slightly warm to the touch almost immediately, because it's a poor conductor of heat. Glass or plastic imitations stay cool for longer.
  • Look for imperfections. Genuine amber is rarely 100% flawless. Tiny bubbles, cloudy patches, or natural striations are a good sign. Suspiciously perfect, uniform pieces are often resin.
  • The static trick. Rub amber against fabric and it can attract small bits of paper, thanks to a static charge. Plastic won't do this.
  • Check the weight. Amber is very light for its size. If a piece feels heavy and glassy, it's more likely to be glass.

How to care for amber jewellery

Amber is soft compared to most gemstones, so it likes to be treated gently:

  • Keep it away from perfume, hairspray, and household chemicals. They can dull the surface over time.
  • Take it off before swimming, showering, or working out.
  • Store it separately from harder stones and metals that could scratch it, ideally wrapped in a soft cloth.
  • Clean it with a soft, slightly damp cloth only. Skip the ultrasonic cleaner and anything abrasive.
  • Avoid direct heat and prolonged sunlight, which can make the colour fade over time.

How to style amber jewellery this season

  • Pair it with warm neutrals. Amber sits beautifully against camel, cream, rust, and chocolate brown. basically your entire autumn wardrobe.
  • Let silver do the work. Most of our amber pieces are set in sterling silver, which keeps the look grounded rather than too "boho."
  • Stack the rings. Amber rings mix well with plain silver bands. Try one of our amber stone rings alongside a simple stacking band for some texture without overdoing it.
  • Keep the rest simple. Amber has so much natural pattern and colour that it doesn't need much competition. One amber piece is often enough to make an outfit feel finished.
  • Layer a pendant under a jumper. A little amber peeking out over a roll neck is a small, easy way to add warmth to a plain outfit.

Amber jewellery is one of those pieces that gets more interesting the more you know about it. It's genuinely one-of-a-kind, and it just works for this time of year. If you're building out your autumn jewellery box, it's a solid place to start.
